About Bennie So Smoove

Music and the arts have been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. My creative journey began in childhood, when I discovered two passions that would stay with me throughout my life: music and art.

Growing up, my sisters and I would listen to my parent’s records and sing along to the music. When I wasn’t singing, I was drawing. I was constantly creating—working on art projects, sketching pictures for friends and classmates, and finding new ways to bring my imagination to life.

These were the days before technology was so readily available. Creativity meant using what you had, thinking outside the box, and improvising. For me, that made the possibilities feel endless. Summer after summer, I would spend countless hours drawing and singing, always reminding myself that practice makes perfect.

As I got older, my passion for music grew even stronger. My sister and I became lead singers in our church’s youth choir, where I developed and refined my vocal abilities. That experience gave me a deeper appreciation for performing and helped shape the artist I would become.

During my teenage years, I became immersed in the golden era of music television. BET, MTV, and VH1 became a major part of my world. I looked forward to shows such as Video Soul, Video Vibrations, Midnight Love, Planet Groove, Rap City, MTV Jams, TRL, Pop Up Video, and VH1 Top 20 Countdown. I would record my favorite music videos onto VHS tapes, carefully building my own personal archive of music history.

My love for collecting music grew right along with me. A good portion of my allowance went toward CD Maxi Singles and cassette singles from places like Walmart, Blockbuster Music, FYE, and Amazon. Many of those treasures are still part of my collection today, preserved in excellent condition.

As an adult, my passion for music and the arts has only grown stronger. My CD collection has expanded tremendously, and I’ve begun the process of digitizing it so these pieces of my musical history can continue to live on. More recently, collecting limited-edition and colored vinyl has become one of my favorite passions.

Over the years, I’ve also become the “go-to” guy for all things music. Friends and family regularly come to me for information about new releases, classic records, vintage music, and the artists and sounds that helped shape different generations.

I created The Bennie So Smoove Xperience as a place to share the passions that have been a part of my life since childhood: Art, Music, and Poetry.

These creative outlets have given me inspiration, joy, memories, and a way to connect with others. I truly can’t imagine my life without them.
